Helpful first: Market foundations

Study it. Test it. Write it down.

A convincing story still needs a cash-flow test

What must happen for the investment thesis to work?

Suppose a fictional business reports ₹10 crore profit and ₹4 crore operating cash flow. You cannot conclude that the accounts are wrong from that ratio alone. Read the working-capital movement, capex, seasonality and acquisition notes. Then compare equivalent periods. A healthy investment cycle and persistent collection deterioration can produce similar headline cash numbers but very different explanations.

Your research task

  1. Write your horizon and liquidity need first. A liability due in six months cannot be made long-term merely because a product has a long-term return chart.
  2. For a fund, read the scheme documents, cost structure, portfolio exposure and exit conditions. Direct and regular plans are not identical cost propositions; compare the actual documents, not a generic return screenshot.
  3. Build a valuation range using explicitly varied cash-flow and discount assumptions. Identify which assumption dominates the result and what evidence would invalidate it.

What you should produce

Write a thesis with three columns: evidence, interpretation and missing evidence. Add an adverse scenario and a reason to wait rather than invest.

The trap to avoid: Starting with the return you want and selecting assumptions that produce it.

Original hypothetical study exercise. Pair it with the chapter sources below; verify current contract rules and product terms separately.
