Dollar, real yields and oil: build a 2022–2025 macro casebook

Nominal yield, real yield and breakeven are different #
A nominal Treasury yield is quoted before inflation adjustment. A TIPS yield is an observed inflation-linked yield; the difference between comparable nominal and TIPS yields is a breakeven measure, influenced by inflation expectations and premia. Subtracting last year’s CPI from a ten-year yield is a different, mismatched calculation.
Gold earns no coupon, so the return available elsewhere matters. That opportunity-cost mechanism is useful, but no coefficient guarantees that a one-basis-point real-yield rise produces a fixed gold loss. Other demand and risk forces can dominate.
Name the dollar series and the investor currency #
The Federal Reserve’s broad dollar index DTWEXBGS is not ICE’s DXY. Basket weights, coverage and construction differ. Use one declared series for a study rather than switching to whichever gives a cleaner chart. USD/INR is a bilateral exchange rate with its own local drivers.
For an Indian buyer, separate global metal return, FX translation and local premium/tax/carry. A dollar rally can pressure the dollar metal quotation while rupee weakness offsets part of that move. This is an attribution question before it is a directional opinion.
Oil has more than one transmission channel #
An oil supply disruption can raise inflation pressure and production costs while damaging growth. A demand-led oil rally may instead signal stronger activity. The implications for central-bank expectations, currencies and silver fabrication differ. Higher oil is not a universal instruction to buy bullion.
For India, consider the import bill and currency channel as hypotheses to test rather than fixed magnitudes. At the company level energy costs and hedging can matter; physical gold has no corporate margin statement. Do not confuse a mining-equity thesis with a metal allocation.
Build a four-year evidence sequence #
Use the 2022 inflation release as the inflation-shock anchor, the July 2023 policy statement as a restrictive-policy anchor, the September 2024 statement as an easing anchor and the June 2025 CPI release as a later inflation observation. These are verified historical facts with different observation dates.
For each window, retrieve the same metal benchmark, DFII10 real yields, broad dollar, Brent and relevant gold-flow series. Record levels, returns, units and download vintage. This chapter supplies a reproducible study design, not an invented four-year regression or an unsupported claim that one factor explained every move.
| Source date | Observation | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 13 July 2022 · BLS | June CPI: 9.1% year on year | A historical inflation reading |
| 26 July 2023 · Fed | Target range: 5.25–5.50% | A historical policy decision |
| 18 September 2024 · Fed | 50 bp cut to 4.75–5.00% | A policy-regime comparison |
| 15 July 2025 · BLS | June CPI: 2.7% year on year | Disinflation versus the 2022 annual rate |
Estimate relationships without mistaking them for laws #
Align timestamps and trading calendars; do not forward-fill a holiday and count it as new information. Use returns for price series and declared changes for yields. Compare rolling relationships and subperiods, and reserve later observations for evaluation.
A fitted relationship can break when central-bank buying, fiscal concerns or liquidity demand changes. State residuals and competing hypotheses. If the relationship fails, revise the model rather than declaring the market irrational merely because it disagrees with your chart.
Hypothetical worked example
A fictional rupee attribution bridge
Dollar metal falls 3% while USD/INR rises 2%. Ignoring local basis and costs, the rupee return is 0.97×1.02−1 = −1.06%, not −1% exactly. Adding the two percentages is only an approximation.
For a 1-million-rupee exposure that is a −10,600 change before product-specific costs. A local basis move or leveraged funding path changes the actual result; keep those items in separate columns.
Common mistakes
- Using DXY and the broad dollar as identical data.
- Assuming oil-led inflation guarantees a metal rally.
- Claiming a regression result without publishing the data window.
What is the approximate rupee return when dollar metal falls 3% and USD/INR rises 2%, before local basis?
Make this chapter useful
Can you defend the reasoning?
Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.
Desk assignment
What to submit
Build a 2022–2025 casebook with four dated windows, consistent series IDs, aligned returns, alternative explanations and one relationship that failed.
Use the research ledger for dated evidence, or the module workbooks for calculations. Separate observations, assumptions and interpretation.
