Chapter 1 of 5

Margin is collateral, not a maximum loss

Separate economic exposure, blocked margin, cash settlement and broker risk controls before comparing leverage.

Four numbers answer four different questions #

Notional exposure measures the economic scale referenced by a position. Margin is the funding or collateral required against obligations. Mark-to-market is the change in position value or its settlement cash flow. Available balance is a ledger and risk-control measure whose definition depends on the provider.

A position can have modest initial funding and a much larger notional. The funding requirement can increase after the position is opened. Neither the initial margin nor the application’s displayed available balance automatically limits the eventual economic loss.

Cash equity and derivatives have different structures #

For the cash segment, risk frameworks can use value-at-risk, extreme-loss and other margins under the applicable rules. A broker’s required upfront collection and a final delivery purchase obligation must be distinguished. A statement about one cash-market facility is not a universal statement about all accounts.

Derivatives use product- and portfolio-specific frameworks. Futures daily losses, option premiums and physically settled obligations create cash needs in addition to the amount initially blocked. Intraday use does not create an exemption from applicable collection or risk controls.

Rules and broker policies are not identical #

Exchanges and clearing corporations define relevant minimum frameworks. Brokers can impose additional risk limits, eligibility conditions and earlier deadlines. A platform’s product label is not itself a regulatory entitlement to a fixed leverage multiple.

Keep the current official rules and the broker’s current policy separately identified. This module reviews principles and specific dated references; it does not advertise a guaranteed margin benefit or provide a live executable funding quote.

Decision lab: Margin is neither price risk nor account equity #

A collateral requirement describes resources needed to maintain an exposure under specified rules. It does not cap loss. Comparing a price gain with margin alone can produce a large percentage that hides how much of the whole account was exposed.

For a fictional position, show notional, deposited resources, account equity, planned loss and an adverse scenario in separate columns. Reconcile the same rupee P&L to each denominator and explain why none alone describes the complete risk.

Hypothetical worked example

The same notional can create a different funding path

A hypothetical ₹10,00,000 futures exposure has an illustrative ₹1,20,000 initial margin. A 4% adverse move is ₹40,000 of price P&L before costs. The risk requirement could also increase during that interval.

If margin later becomes ₹1,60,000 while losses require cash settlement, simply retaining the original ₹1,20,000 may be insufficient. The exact accounting depends on the clearing and broker process.

The example’s percentages are chosen inputs, not a current schedule. Ask what money must be available, in what eligible form and by which deadline.

Common mistakes

  • Calling blocked margin a guaranteed maximum loss.
  • Promising a fixed intraday leverage multiplier across all products.
Check your understanding

Does a margin deposit cap a futures position’s possible loss?

Make this chapter useful

Can you defend the reasoning?

Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.

Sources and further reading

Further-reading references from the curriculum source list. Contract sizes, expiry calendars, settlement references, margin parameters and tax treatment can change; verify the current operative documents for the actual product. Worked figures are illustrative, not current quotes.
