Chapter 5 of 5

Shortfalls, changing rules and a pre-expiry checklist

Learn how to monitor a changing funding requirement and verify rules without relying on stale leverage tables or broker screenshots.

A shortfall can arise without a new order #

Risk parameters can change; an offset can disappear; collateral can fall; a position can incur a cash loss. Each can create a funding gap even if no additional position was opened. Pending transfers and settlement credits may not be usable by the relevant deadline.

An available-margin screen is a snapshot with a provider-specific definition. Reconcile it with component obligations rather than assuming its label describes every future requirement. Keep proof of actual fund and pledge status, not only an initiated transfer.

Read the authority, scope and effective date #

Find the issuing exchange, clearing corporation or regulator, the product and segment, the publication date and the effective date. A rule announced today can start later, while an old educational article may describe a framework already replaced.

When an overview and a later operative circular appear inconsistent, do not average the two statements. Check the circular’s scope and implementation notices. Index, individual-stock and commodity rules can legitimately differ.

Use a practical checklist #

Identify every contract’s lot and quote units, expiry or tender window, cash/physical/devolvement settlement, required cash and inventory, known margin transitions and broker cutoff. Add a contingency for an unavailable exit.

The learning platform does not calculate official shortfall penalties, live broker balances or real-time margin eligibility. Ask the provider for the applicable policy and official basis. Neither an educational disclaimer nor a calculator result overrides an obligation.

Decision lab: A funded exit is an operational plan #

A margin top-up, a rollover and a closing order can all fail at the worst time. A plan that depends on unlimited emergency transfers or guaranteed broker liquidation is incomplete. A daily screenshot cannot replace a dated obligations ledger.

Write trigger, action, responsible person, funding source and latest decision time for each obligation. Include an alternative when one transfer or exit fails. Distinguish rules confirmed in current official documents from assumptions still needing resolution.

Hypothetical worked example

A gap can appear through two channels at once

A fictional account starts with ₹70,000 usable resources against ₹60,000 margin. Later, the requirement rises to ₹75,000 while recognized collateral falls by ₹8,000. Resources become ₹62,000 and the total gap becomes ₹13,000, before new settlement cash needs.

The original ₹10,000 surplus did not guarantee enough capacity for the later state. If a premium or daily loss must be paid in cash, a separate cash gap can be larger.

A current calculation should use one consistent timestamp and avoid counting a pledged asset, cash ledger credit or margin release twice. Record the assumptions that changed, rather than blaming a single unexplained balance figure.

Common mistakes

  • Using a social-media leverage table as an authoritative current rule.
  • Ignoring the difference between publication date and effective date.

Which information is essential when reading a margin circular?

Make this chapter useful

Can you defend the reasoning?

Before moving on, answer the self-check in your own words and write why each alternative fails. Use the worked example to test that explanation. Then apply it in the module research task; keep the assumptions and the evidence that could change your answer.

Sources and further reading

Further-reading references from the curriculum source list. Contract sizes, expiry calendars, settlement references, margin parameters and tax treatment can change; verify the current operative documents for the actual product. Worked figures are illustrative, not current quotes.
